Microlights can be registered with the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia (HGFA) or Recreational Aviation Australia (RAA) and operate under the Civil Aviation Regulations that also regulate three-axis ultralights.

Royal Newcastle Aero Club (RNAC) airfield at Rutherford has an active microlight training school operating from it that fosters a significant microlight community.  To complement this, RNAC has recently brought on line an Airborne Classic Trike for hire.  This allows approved pilots to  hire a microlight for recreational flights around the beautiful Hunter Region, boasting great coastlines, many vineyards and spectacular sandstone rock walls.
